This will be a new work in the body of MachineGames, famous for the action-packed Wolfenstein series. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will not have so much shooting but rather will focus on exploration, the resolution of puzzles, and telling great stories.

A Move from Guns to Puzzles

MachineGames is changing the game with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

MachineGames cut its teeth on the visceral, toe-to-toe combat of Wolfenstein, in which players were given the tools and the go-ahead to cut down a legion of foes. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle represents a different beast altogether: It is a slower, more contemplative experience. Players will use Indiana Jones’ wit, whip, and the environment around him to outsmart their enemies, rather than just blasting their way through.

This sort of new style of gameplay was quite a shift, but Jens Andersson, the game design director, mentioned it would be helping a lot in delivering something totally unique for the adventure genre. You will still get to fight Nazis, but the core experience is about solving puzzles and exploring. Whether it’s using objects like a rolling pin in combat or navigating tricky environments, this game emphasizes resourcefulness and problem solving just like Indiana Jones in the movies.

Redefining the Adventure Genre

Adventure games have come a long way in the past years, from classic point-and-click titles to blockbuster actioners like Uncharted. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle doesn’t exactly fall into either category, though; it sort of mixes the two. There’s a lot of action, but what you’re really doing most of the time is exploring, discovering things, and putting your brain to work just about as much as your trigger finger.

It was explained by the game director, Jerk Gustafsson, that this is not just any Indiana Jones game but a “MachineGames adventure.” What he meant was that the game will still exude the same immersion and cinematic feel, but it’s basically turning a notch down to really focus on the thrill of discovery and storytelling.

Original: Tells Stories at the Core

At the heart of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is its story. What defines the products of MachineGames is that a narrative is always woven into them, in one way or another. Instead of just fighting through levels, you’ll take time to investigate ancient artifacts, solve puzzles, and put clues together. Most of the game will involve exploration and utilizing Indy’s camera to take pictures of artifacts that help guide you through the game’s mysteries. This shift from action to storytelling is really pretty bold for MachineGames, but it’s one that has the potential to bring Indiana Jones’ adventures to life in a completely new way.

A New Take on Combat

The combat in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle reflects Indy’s style: quick thinking and improvisation. In one moment during gameplay, Indy rips a whip from a foe, who then stumbles and knocks himself out. It’s such a small, humorous detail but feels like it could be right out of an Indiana Jones movie. The team worked really hard to devise a dynamic combat system that would let players interact with their environment in clever ways.

A New Beginning for MachineGames

The next Wolfenstein has many people sitting on the edges of their seats, but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle offers something fresh to fans of him and adventure games in general. With a focus on exploration, puzzle solving, and immersive storytelling, this game is going to be a welcome new entry to the adventure genre.

Scheduled for release on December 9, the game is slated for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass, with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle both promising to bring something new and exciting to old fans of the genre and new ones just trying to look for a fresh adventure.
